JANUARY 2021 UPDATE - Sprint service will be ending sometime this
year. I don't know of any Sprint MVNOs that is still allowing new Sprint
sign-ups, so I'm not sure why anyone would need a new Sprint sim card now.
As of January 18, 2021,
Tello Mobile, the cell phone service
provider I use, is now using T-Mobile for coverage and has a new Tello
T-Mobile GSM sim card. T-Mobile purchased Sprint last year, and all of the
Sprint towers are slowly being converted over to T-Mobile. I'm going to
leave this Sprint Sim card kit review online for historical purposes for the
time being, but again, I'm not sure if any service providers are allowing
new signups with Sprint sim cards.
If you want to sign up for Sprint service either directly from Sprint, or
from a Sprint MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) like
Tello, you'll need a Sprint-capable (CDMA)
phone as well as the correct model Sprint sim card. If you buy a phone from
Sprint (or the MVNO like Tello), the phone should include a Sprint sim card,
but if you want to buy your own phone or if you want to use your own
existing phone (referred to as BYOD or bring-your-own-device), you need to
make sure your phone is "Sprint capable" (i.e. supports CDMA) and you will
also need a Sprint sim card. Unlike GSM sims (i.e. AT&T / TMobile) where you
only need to worry about the sim size (normal, micro, or nano size), with
Sprint you need to get the correct model sim card for the phone you have.
This can be a bit of a pain. The good news is that unlike GSM sim cards
which can only be activated and used once and which then no longer work
after service is cancelled, a Sprint sim can be used over and over again, so
once you have it, it will always work, even if you previously cancelled your
service or if you want to switch Sprint MVNO providers.

| 2020 update - The outside printing on the
packaging on the Sprint Universal sim kit has changed from my picture
above. More importantly, two of the sim cards inside are mislabeled.
This update applies to any packaging with a "c2020 Sprint" on the back
of the package. The package still contains four sim cards labeled A,
B, C, and D per my picture above. "A" is correctly labeled SIMOLW506C
and "D" is correctly labeled SIMOLW516TQ. However, "B" is incorrectly
labeled "SIMOLW506C" and is actually SIMOLW416Q, and "C" is
incorrectly labeled "SIMOLW506C" and is actually SIMOLW506TQ. So you
still get the four different sim card models, but B and C have the
wrong model number printed on the card. The correct sim models are:
"A" is SIMOLW506C (labeled correctly)
"B" is SIMOLW416Q (incorrectly labeled as SIMOLW506C)
"C" is SIMOLW506TQ (incorrectly labeled as SIMOLW506C)
"D" is SIMOLW516TQ (labeled correctly) |
IMPORTANT: Remember that for Sprint, you need to get the correct
model number Sprint sim... my Moto G4 used a SIMGLW446C or a SIMOLW506TQ,
while my Moto G6 uses a SIMOLW416Q. As you can see, sometimes a phone like
my G4 might have two Sprint sim model numbers available and either will
work. But the SIMGLW446C will not work for the Moto G6 and the SIMOLW416Q
will not work for the Moto G4. So find out which Sprint sim model you need
for your specific phone and make sure you get the correct sim model!
What Sprint sim card model do you need? The easiest way to
determine what Sprint sim card model number you need is to use the Tello
Mobile phone checker here. Enter your phone serial number and it will tell
you if your phone will work on Tello (Sprint) and it will ask you if you
need a sim card. If you say yes, it will tell you the model number you need
(you can then buy the sim from Tello for $10 if you want). If the sim model
you need is: SIMOLW506TQ, SIMOLW416Q, SIMOLW506C, or SIMOLW516TQ, you can
buy the Sprint sim card kit for $2.99 on Amazon which includes all four sim
cards.
As stated above, the Amazon Sprint sim card kit includes different four
sim cards (SIMOLW506TQ, SIMOLW416Q, SIMOLW506C and SIMOLW516TQ), and you
just use the correct sim card for your phone. Just make sure your phone uses
one of these four sim cards, and not a different model Sprint sim card. I've
listed the four included sim models and some of the phones they work on.
They may also work for other phones not listed.

Tello told me that I needed D with OLW416TQ for my Moto G7 u say
otherwise.

Hi Pat, I don't see where my page recommends what sim to use for the Moto
G7, so I'm not sure why you are saying that I recommend otherwise? In any
event, I would go off of what the
Tello
IMEI phone checker says for your phone's serial number (IMEI). Also,
if you get the Amazon kit or the Amazon Tello kit with the four different
sims, I'm sure one of the four sims will work, and it should be the one
Tello says. I've set up several different Moto phones on Tello (but not a
Moto G7), and a few of them can actually use two different sim models,
depending on which one you have. But if you use the sim model Tello
recommends, you should be fine. Thanks for commenting!
